Catching up with Katherine Borst Jones at The Ohio State University! I studied with KBJ between 2005-2007, before I moved to Manchester to study at the Royal Northern College of Music.

I also gave a guest lecture to the OSU flute studio. I spoke about realities of being a freelance musician, shared my current project,
Coming Up for Air, which commissions pieces limited to a single breath, performed Larry Goves Extracts from South Korea and Japan (2004), and presented some details on my learning process (as well as teaching the studio the first line on air flutes) of Brian Ferneyhough's Unity Capsule.

I performed Briccialdi's Carnival of Venice with the Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band for the annual Troy Mayor's Concert, conducted by Patrick Reynolds. For an encore, I played The Great Train Race by Ian Clarke, a high-octane solo flute piece that uses extended techniques (including playing two or more notes at once, singing & playing at the same time) to create sound effects of a crazy, awesome flute-train journey. There was some debate with my 93-year-old grandfather (who was my first flute teacher) when he declared it impossible to split the air stream to achieve more than one note at a time. He suggested witchcraft! Not only did I get a standing ovation in Troy, an actual train lumbered by and tooted loudly just after I finished!

I played in the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for four years while in high school, conducted by Patrick. My trip home happened to fall perfectly to do this concert and I'm so happy it worked out!

Royaumont Abbey, about an hour north of Paris, was a magical setting to intensively rehearse with Ensemble Voix Nouvelle! I benefitted from coachings with Keiko Murakami, Jean Philip Wurtz, and members of Ensemble Multilatéral and Tana Quartet. We prepared and performed works by Mark Andre, Philip Leroux, Jason Thorpe Buchanan, and Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh. I also performed some pieces from Coming Up for Air. A few of the composers managed to break away from their insanely intense writing work to make one breath pieces with me! More on these new pieces soon!
