Coming Up for Air is the perfect vehicle for a variety of educational workshops, open to composers of all ages and experience levels. Workshops have been delivered in wide range of settings, Cambridge University to whole-class primary Year 4.
Using the guiding question: "what is possible to perform in one breath?", composers are immediately drawn in to the universally relatable function of breathing, how sounds are produced on the flute, how different respiratory conditions can affect breathing capacity, what extended technique sound like and how they are notated, and what novel techniques can be invented to include sounds on the inhale - the most often forgotten element of playing, but possibly the most important action of all.
Examples of works in the 150+ collection are also shared, with approaches spanning text scores, traditional Western classical notation, graphic scores, scribbles on paper, and pieces that only live in my memory.
Coming Up for Air workshops create a playful and safe space for experimentation. They are accessible, flexible, and tailored to each setting.
